SSP self-certification extension
Employees can now self-certify for SSP purposes for 28 calendar days rather than seven days.
This change is effective from 17 December 2021 and will last until 26 January 2022. It’s thought to be designed to free up GPs to focus on the vaccine and booster roll-out. See the Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) Regulations 2021 which increase the time in which an employee is required to provide medical evidence, e.g. a fit note, from 7 to 28 days. They apply to anyone who first became ill after 9 December (so from 10 December) who remains unfit to work after 7 days. The new rules only change the self-certification period. All of the other rules around SSP and self-certification continue to apply.
